From Humble Beginnings to a Life of Achievement
Long before his name became synonymous with champion gamefowl breeding, Biboy Enriquez was simply a young boy growing up in Quezon City, witnessing his parents struggle to rebuild their business after the hardships of World War II.
Coming from an ordinary middle-class family, Biboy watched his parents’ determination slowly transform their small business into a successful venture. That early exposure to perseverance and hard work shaped his character and eventually led him into the world of entrepreneurship. His journey first took him into the hotel industry, where he established the Sulu Hotel and later became involved in several major hospitality ventures, including Puerto Azul Beach Hotel, where he served as Vice President of Operations.
But his ambitions extended beyond hotels. He became one of the pioneers behind the beauty pageant industry in the Philippines, co-founding Mutya ng Pilipinas Miss Asia Pacific and acquiring the franchise of Miss World Philippines, which he held for 15 years before it was eventually transferred to Stella Araneta. His business interests also reached the entertainment scene, becoming involved with establishments such as Playboy Club, Stargazer Disco, and later Euphoria Disco.
For many years, Biboy lived in the spotlight—a businessman surrounded by hotels, entertainment, and influential personalities. But eventually, he decided to step away from the fast-paced world of business and search for something closer to nature. That search brought him back to a passion that started when he was just a child.
A Childhood Passion That Became a Legacy
Biboy’s connection with gamefowl began when he was only eight years old. “I just developed a love for it because my parents’ personal driver was raising native chickens in our backyard,” he recalled. What started as a simple childhood fascination slowly developed into a deeper understanding of breeding. During his teenage years, Biboy began acquiring quality gamefowl from La Loma and studying the principles behind successful breeding.
His passion grew even stronger when he met the legendary Paeng Araneta, widely regarded as one of the greatest figures in Philippine gamefowl history. Through Araneta’s mentorship, Biboy learned valuable lessons about breeding, bloodlines, and the discipline required to succeed in the industry.
Eventually, he became not only a breeder but also one of the most respected derby promoters in the country. As a promoter, he made one principle clear: fairness always came first. Even when he had his own entries, Biboy chose not to participate because he believed a promoter must remain neutral and protect the integrity of the competition.
The Birth of a Philippine Gamefowl Institution
In 1988, Biboy became one of the key figures behind the International Derby at the Araneta Coliseum, an event that would later become known worldwide as the World Slasher Cup. Nene Araneta invited him to become a co-promoter because of his ability to attract participants and his strong relationships within the gamefowl community.
Because of his hotel background, Biboy was able to provide hospitality unlike any other. Many international participants stayed at Sulu Hotel, located near the Araneta Coliseum, where breeders gathered after the matches to exchange stories, strategies, and friendships.
The derby became more than just a competition—it became a meeting place for breeders from around the world. After his partnership with Araneta ended in 1992, Biboy continued promoting major events and became involved with other organizations, including the U-Cup, helping push Philippine gamefowl into a larger international stage.
Building Firebird Gamefarm
After leaving the hotel industry, Biboy focused his energy on building what would become one of the country’s most recognized breeding operations. Nearly three decades ago, he purchased a four-hectare property in Tanay, Rizal. What began as a modest farm gradually expanded as he acquired neighboring properties.
Today, Firebird Gamefarm has grown into a 26-hectare operation, with ambitions of expanding further. For Biboy, success is not measured only by the number of chickens produced but by the people behind the operation.
The farm employs 48 workers, and he ensures they are treated as partners rather than employees. Through profit-sharing, comfortable housing, free water and electricity, and recreational facilities, Biboy believes loyalty is built through respect and care.“I believe when employees are happy, they become committed. They become part of the success of the farm,” he explained. This philosophy has helped Firebird reach impressive production numbers, with thousands of gamefowl produced annually.
The Science Behind Successful Breeding
Behind every champion is a system. Biboy believes that successful breeding is not based on luck—it requires careful planning, accurate records, and continuous learning. At Firebird, every detail is monitored, from bloodlines and breeding combinations to health programs, vaccination schedules, feeding, and conditioning.
He also believes women play an important role in the industry because of their attention to detail and discipline. Many of his farm’s record-keeping responsibilities are handled by female employees, whom he describes as meticulous and dedicated. He also highlighted the growing participation of female gaffers in the sport, including Robie, one of the first recognized female knife handlers in the cockpit. For Biboy, their involvement represents the evolution of the industry.
The Search for the Perfect Bloodline
Currently, Biboy maintains around ten proven bloodlines, many originating from the United States. However, he believes that successful breeders must always remain open to improvement. “Being selfish will not help you grow. You need to have an open mind,” he shared. Through exchanges with other respected breeders, he continues to improve his lines while preserving the qualities that made them successful.
His approach to breeding is similar to a chef searching for the perfect ingredients. “You are creating your own fighting machine. You are trying to develop something with the qualities you want.” Among his most successful achievements is his famous White Kelso line, which became one of his highest-winning bloodlines.
The story behind it began unexpectedly when a white offspring appeared from a Red Kelso breeding. Initially surprised, Biboy questioned whether it was a mistake. But after researching historical records, he discovered that white Kelso throwbacks had existed before and were known for producing exceptional results. Through careful preservation and further development, the White Kelso became one of Firebird’s most celebrated families.
Lessons From a Lifetime of Success
Despite decades of achievements, Biboy Enriquez remains grounded. He credits his humble beginnings for shaping the way he treats people. “I grew up as an ordinary kid. I understand how ordinary people feel and think, and I never changed.” For him, gamefowl is not only about winning. It teaches discipline, patience, humility, and acceptance.
“There are ups and downs. You need to accept defeat and remain humble in victory.” He believes the industry will continue growing because of the passion it creates among people. Beyond competition, it creates friendships, communities, and lifelong connections.
Advice to the Next Generation
For aspiring breeders, Biboy offers simple but meaningful advice: start small, learn continuously, and invest wisely. “Study first. Visit farms. Become friends with breeders. Ask questions because experienced breeders are willing to share what they know.” Most importantly, he believes success comes from patience. Building a great breeding program does not happen overnight. It requires knowledge, commitment, and respect for the craft.
